HEAVEN, HELL & DREAMLAND AT DEUS
It was a big week for going back to the future at Deus, Canggu, with veteran surf writer Phil Jarratt, photographer and filmer Dick Hoole, and pioneer surfer turned author Rusty Miller all in town to celebrate Bali’s surfing heritage as part of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival.
The inaugural surf cultural fringe event included the launch of Jarratt’s new book, Bali Heaven and Hell, which covers in some detail the past half century of surf exploration in Bali, Dick Hoole’s Dreamland: Bali in the 70s photo exhibition and a special screening of Albert Falzon’s 1972 masterpiece Morning of the Earth, with Miller on hand to describe what it was like to be possibly the first to surf big Uluwatu.
The two night festival of surf nostalgia brought out old salts who haven’t done the social rounds in years, including Bukit pioneers Steve Palmer and Michael Little, and the elusive Warren “Abdul” Anderson, a Kuta surfer since 1970.
With big crowds attending both nights, it looks like surf culture at Deus will become a permanent satellite event of the Ubud Writers Festival.
