Pocket Full of Gene

So, I must come clean…when the idea sprouted in my mind to spark up the ole interview machine, it was out of pure laziness. For some reason I thought that a few quick questions would soothe the savage beast, so to speak. Well, it didn’t. Now when I’m presented with the task of a blog that happens to be about someone that is back in town or lurking about ‘The Temple’ all I can think about is what can I ask him or her. It’s as if I’ve slipped into Captain Ahab mode. I’ve got this looming obsession in the back of my mind and madness comes over me, and I must capture the beast… And, my sights are set on Ellis Ericson… Us-State your full name and zodiac sign? Him-Ellis Gene Ericson – Gemini Us-Sick. I’m an Aquarius… Us-You were just in Costa Rica with Tyler Warren and filming with Jimmy Kinard how was that? What were you up to? Him-Yep, sure was. T Warren pitched the idea to me last year in Bali. Protocol was to make a bunch of our own boards, load up the bags, head down for 3 weeks and try them all out. We scored, Tyler shredded and I felt like my boards worked great in the hollow South American waves. Jimmy James jumped on the trip last minute and documented in true shirtless style - plus he nailed one of the best JJ signature 'cheater 5 cutback' I have ever seen. Us-Your old mans a shaper, did you hang with him in the shed when you were a small guy? Him-Yeah of course, I used to hate it! He would always make me fix all my dings and creases and watch him shape. When your a grom you don’t want to be hanging around the bay, u want to be out in the water snapping the creation your old man has spent 3 days creating. Haha. But as time prevailed and I started to get behind the planer and really work with him on board design I cant get enough of the bay now. These days I’m constantly annoying the old man with my immature ideas on design - I’m like 'Hey dad, what about S deck? He's like 'we tried it in the 70's - didn’t work then, doesn't work now’ haha Us- I've seen a few pix of you from back in the day, short hair, throwing tail, bashing airs, contest jerseys; now you seemed to have shifted gears. The hair is a bit long and fringed, you’re getting down on single fin trackers that you shaped, soul arches with a power carves. What gives ma man, are you maturing in your style or paying homage to a past that made way for the future? Maybe a bit of both? Him-Throwing tail, bashing airs! Thanks Tyler - god I wish I was still that athletic these days haha - I guess everything is a maturing process in some way - I've always found it fun to go really far in one direction then really far in another - I’m constantly doing it in everything I do, for example Ill constantly change boards, even mid session I might go from 7'10'' Midlength right back to a 5'5'' thrustery thing and with doing that my whole way of riding a wave and mindset changes, ill adapt things from my Midlength surfing into my thruster approach or vice versa, That’s what I’m into about surfing, it changes, mind changing , you can change yours - wait! Didn’t Bowie write a song about this? 'Turn and face the strange - ch ch ch changes!'' Us-You down with Black Sabbath? Him-Yep. Us- Nice. Us-Have you always shaped your own boards? Him-Not always, my old man Bruce did so for the formative years. God knows what my surfing would be like if I had always ridden my own shapes from day one - Haha. Us-How does it feel to be back in Bali? You were on the go for a bit there. Him-Feels free and easy - great to link up with Salsa and Jimmy, couldn't wait to make some boards and get testing again. Waves co-operated too - few sneaky barrels here and there haven't gone down to bad. Us-You live with Jason 'Salsa' Salisbury do you ever catch him sneaking your shampoo & conditioner? Him-Geez, maybe if I used the stuff - I think Sals just wakes up every morning, flicks his hair back and that’s how it lands - He's that good looking it’s depressing. haha. Us-I've seen, first hand, some of the boards that you have been shaping, real smooth. Diamond tails, flex diamond tails, pin tails, baby squash, flyers, etc. and you back it all up by surfing what you shape as you travel the globe. Hawaii, California, Costa Rica, Bali and your home land Australia. Are you evolving as a shaper? If so, are your boards? Or are you working on different techniques because you’re riding different waves and find that the go to round pin or square tail just aren't what you’re looking for any more? Him-I'd hope to be evolving, my initial approach with shaping was to go right back to the basic and take it from there, I feel I’m still travelling on that path and am loving the depth of a surf trip or even surf session you can get by pre-meditating what boards you will be riding in the condition you foresee yourself surfing. That’s what is making me tick at the moment is shaping specific boards to specific waves and seeing if the theories and background work you did in the shaping bay pays off in the aftermath of surfing the wave. It just adds another level to surfing and shaping aspect for me and really gives a 'cause and effect' notion to what I’m trying to do - being at such an early stage in my experience I’m super into trial and error. haha. Us-Wow, that was a bombardment of questions. Lets get in the shallow end of the pool, shall we? Us-How’s the new bike? Him-Epic, it’s going great - DHump, Mustang and the Bengkel boys hit the nail on the head with the aesthetics I wanted and the extra 100cc the jammed on top of that piston makes Niah scream. All in all, stoked. Us-What do you take in your coffee? Him-Tidak Gula. Us-What’s my favorite Color? Him-Pink Us-Man, I feel good about this, do you? Him-Yeah mate - Love looking and typing into my laptop for 30 minutes while the waves pump! Us-Any last words for the folks to ponder? Him-Good Vibes. Folks, what a stand up guy, Ellis Gene Ericson, if you need him. He will be hanging and shaping out the back at “The Temple” for the better part of the rest of the year. His boards are sick, I’m on the short list for one myself. He loves a good chat about board ideas, both his and yours. So, if you see him out and about, yell out for Gene, and turn and face the change…
